7.14 Synchronous drive - single roll

Synchronous drives are part of the production process of continuous material which is produced or

refined at a high speed. At the starting and end point of these systems they are often combined with

winding drives. Alternatively also cross cutters and flying saws can separate the material at the end

of a production line and thus provide the transition from continuous production to a quickly clocked

job production. In production lines the synchronous drives are the most important drives, since they

control the material flow and therefore the machining process.

The individual rolls can be equipped with single drives and can be mechanically coupled. Apart from

factors resulting from fixed mechanical conditions, the torque to be transmitted basically depends

on the friction coefficient between the material and roll surface. In application cases where the fric-

tion coefficient can be strongly reduced, e. g. due to pollution, corresponding measures like an anti-

spin control within the control structure are to be provided to avoid slip between the circumferen-

tial roller speed and the web.

In order to be able to couple high tensile forces into the web, usually roll arrangements with great

angles of wrap in the form of S- or omega rolls are designed.
