6 Laws of motion and mathematical
background
6.1 Specification of movement
According to VDI document 2143 “Laws of Motion fo r Cam Profiles”, movement can be specified as
follows:
Type of movement Abbreviation Velocity Acceleration Graphical
representation
Stop R v=0 a=0 Line
Constant velocity G v ≠ 0 a=0 Line
Turning point U v=0 a ≠ 0 Point
Movement B v ≠ 0 a ≠ 0 Point
These four motion types can be used to specify the
physical parameters for all practical motion problems.
The selected boundary values are required to calculate
the connecting profile sections between t he defined
segments:
• Since the acceleration f or motion types R and G = 0,
they can be graphically represented as a line. In t his
case, the boundary values on the left and on the right
end of the line are identical.
• Fo
motion t

ation ≠ 0. These
.
two elements can be graphically represented as a
point.
After specifying the basic elements for the required
motion and selecting the required boundary values, the
interconnecting curves can be calculated according to
the laws of motion. Depending on the selected
connection t ype, it is possible to achieve jerk and
jolt-free motion profiles.
Tip!
Only specify motion parameters which are absolutely necessar y to solve the problem! The higher the
degree of freedom for Cam Designer in automatic generation of connections, the smoother the motion
profile.
